My uncle's toast at a 2018 Christmas dinner still makes me cringe
We were all sitting around the big table at my parents' house in Cincinnati, about fifteen of us. My uncle, who had maybe one too many glasses of wine, stood up to give a toast. He looked right at my cousin Sarah, who had just started dating a new guy, and said, 'I hope this one lasts longer than the last three.' The room got so quiet you could hear the fridge humming. Sarah just stared at her plate, and her boyfriend looked like he wanted to disappear into the floor. It was one of those moments where you wish you could just rewind time by ten seconds. I think about it every holiday now, and it makes me miss the days when the biggest drama was who got the last dinner roll. What's the most awkward thing a relative has ever said during a toast at your place?

My aunt gave a toast at my sister's rehearsal dinner in Albany. She spent three full minutes talking about my sister's ex-boyfriend, calling him "the one that got away." She used his name, Mark, like five times. My sister's fiance just slowly put his glass down and didn't pick it back up. The best man had to jump in with a loud, quick toast of his own to try and save the mood. We all just started clinking glasses really fast to move past it.
