Picked my dad's Christmas dinner over my in-laws, still getting side-eye

Last month I had to choose between my dad's annual prime rib dinner on the 24th and my wife's family's tamale party on the 25th, both in the same weekend. I went with my dad because he just got out of the hospital in Phoenix and I figured it might be his last big one. My mother-in-law texted me a photo of the empty chair at their table with a sad face emoji. Has anyone else had to pick one side and deal with the guilt for weeks after?
