PSA: Stop bringing store-bought pies to Thanksgiving and pretending they're homemade
Last year at my aunt's house in Portland, my cousin Lisa brought a pie that still had the Marie Callender's sticker on the bottom. She tried to peel it off quick but we all saw it. I mean I get it, baking is hard and time consuming, but just own it if you didn't make it yourself. I clean houses for a living and I see people stash store-bought stuff in their own Tupperware all the time before guests come over. It's way less awkward to just say hey I grabbed this from the bakery than to get caught red-handed with a label. Has anyone else had a relative get defensive about faking a dessert?

Take the opposite side and say people are way too hung up on homemade vs store-bought. Not everyone has the time or skill to bake from scratch, and pretending otherwise is classist honestly. A pie is a pie, it tastes good either way, and the whole point of Thanksgiving is spending time with family not competing about who made the best dessert. If someone brings a pie and says it's from the store, good for them for being honest. If they want to peel off a sticker and not make a big deal about it, who cares? You're eating it for free, so just say thanks and move on.

Peel off a sticker and not make a big deal" is exactly right. I had a friend who brought a store bought pie to a potluck once and someone actually called her out for it. She just laughed and said "yep, and it's delicious, want some?" Everyone shut up after that. Honestly, if you're stressing over making pie crust from scratch when you worked a 12 hour shift the day before, just grab one from the bakery. Nobody's gonna remember the crust when they're stuffed with turkey anyway.
