Store-bought pie beats my grandma's from-scratch recipe, and I'll die on that hill
Store-bought pie beats my grandma's from-scratch recipe, and I'll die on that hill. Every Thanksgiving she makes her famous apple pie, crust from scratch, apples hand sliced. I've watched her do it for 30 years at her place in Des Moines. Last year I brought a $9 bakery pie from the local grocery chain just to compare. Hers always comes out a little tart and the bottom crust gets soggy by the time we eat. The store one was sweet, flaky, and held up after sitting out for two hours. My cousin called me a traitor, but I ate the last slice, so I stand by it. Has anyone else switched to a bought pie and had to face the family committee about it?
Grandma's pie sounds like it has real history behind it, and that counts for something a grocery chain can't copy. A store pie might win on texture and timing, but yours was made by hand for your family for 30 years. Soggy crust and all, I'd take hers.
