The 3-second pause that stopped my aunt's political rant cold

Every Thanksgiving my aunt goes off about whatever news story got her fired up, and last year it was the local zoning mess in our town of 2,000 people. She was mid-sentence, red in the face, and my cousin was about to walk out of the room. I tried changing the subject twice, no luck. Then I remembered a trick from a customer service job I had in 2019 where I had to deal with angry callers. I just put up my hand, palm out, and said 'hold on' in a calm voice, then counted to three in my head before speaking. She actually stopped, looked confused, and by the time I asked her to pass the rolls, the heat was gone. It's not a magic fix, but that little pause broke her momentum enough that dinner went normal for the next hour. Has anyone else tried a weird trick like that to stop a family argument before it starts?

That pause trick works because people get locked into their own rhythm when they're riled up. You're not arguing with them, you're just breaking the loop so they have to reset. I've used a similar thing with my dad by asking him to grab something from the kitchen mid-rant, works about half the time.
