The Christmas Eve my uncle tried to carve the turkey with a butter knife

Two years ago at my Aunt Carol's house in Des Moines, everyone was waiting for dinner and my uncle Frank realized he forgot the carving knife. He grabbed a butter knife from the drawer and spent 15 minutes sawing at that bird while the gravy got cold. My cousin Jenny whispered that it looked like a horror movie and I snorted eggnog out my nose. Has anyone else had a relative make a dinner disaster worse by refusing to ask for help?

My dad once tried to open a bottle of wine with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers at Thanksgiving. He was dead set on proving he could do it himself instead of just asking my brother for the corkscrew that was literally two feet away. He ended up chipping the bottle neck and we had to strain glass shards out of the merlot with a coffee filter. The turkey story reminds me of that stubborn silence at holiday dinners.

Wait, is your dad secretly a contestant on some DIY survival show where the prize is just not having to ask for help? The coffee filter trick is honestly pretty clever, but that's a lot of work just to avoid looking at your brother for two seconds. I bet the whole room was dead quiet except for the sound of glass scraping against that filter like some kind of sad kitchen concert. It's wild how we'll risk drinking shards of glass just to prove a point nobody asked us to prove. Did your brother ever say anything, or did he just sit there with the corkscrew in his hand like "well, this is happening"? The turkey story sounds like a warmup act for that wine bottle disaster.

Oh man, this hits close to home. My brother-in-law once tried to fix a stuck oven door with a hammer on Thanksgiving. He broke the handle clean off and we had to order pizza while waiting for a repair guy. That stubborn pride thing runs deep in families, I guess.
