Took me 4 Thanksgivings to notice my uncle leaves the room every time politics comes up

My family is loud and opinionated so I never thought twice about it. Last year my cousin pointed out that our uncle literally goes to the bathroom or "checks on the turkey" the second anyone brings up taxes or news. 4 years of holidays and I never caught it. Now I feel like a jerk for not realizing he just wanted to avoid the shouting matches. Anyone else got a relative who's been hiding in plain sight?

My dad does the exact same thing with sports talk, he’ll just quietly slip out to grab more ice from the garage. It’s like people develop these little escape routes in their own homes just to keep the peace. Once you start noticing them, you realize everyone’s got some weird habit to dodge a topic that makes them uncomfortable.
