Tried making my grandma's ham glaze at Thanksgiving, it turned neon pink

I swapped the maraschino cherry juice for cranberry juice thinking it would be an upgrade, and the whole ham glowed like a traffic cone. The kids thought it was radioactive and my aunt refused to eat it, has anyone else ruined a family recipe by 'improving' it?
