Uncle Bob's 'secret' salad dressing turned out to be just ketchup and mayo

So at my cousin's graduation party last Saturday, my uncle Bob makes a big show of mixing his famous dressing right at the table. Everyone's watching, he's talking about his travels in Italy, then I see him squeeze ketchup into mayo. Tastes exactly like Thousand Island. I called him out and now half my family thinks I'm rude. Has anyone else had a relative's 'special' recipe turn out to be something basic?

That whole "Italy" backstory is the best part, like he's trying to sell you on the mystique when it's literally just two condiments. My aunt once swore her "garlic aioli" was a family secret from Spain but it was straight up mayo with crushed garlic in it. I think the showmanship is what gets me more than the actual recipe - you'd think they were hiding a Michelin star secret instead of lunch lady sauce.

Haha yeah @the_charlie, that aunt story is painfully relatable. It's like everyone has that one relative who thinks adding basil to jarred sauce counts as a secret family recipe from Tuscany. The whole performance feels more about the drama than the food itself, like you're supposed to be impressed by the storytelling before you even taste it.
