Debate: Do you split the bill 50/50 on a first date or let the person who asked pay?

Heard two friends arguing about this at a coffee shop yesterday. One said splitting shows independence and avoids awkwardness. The other said it kills the romantic vibe and makes it feel like a business meeting. I got asked out for drinks last Wednesday and the guy insisted on paying but I felt weird about it lol. What do you all think? Has anyone had a date go sour because of how the check was handled?

Does this even matter when half the time the date is just gonna be awkward anyway? I had a girl once insist on paying for everything because she felt bad that I drove 45 minutes to meet her, but then she spent the whole night on her phone and we never even talked about a second date. Honestly, the bill thing is just a distraction from the real problem which is whether you even like each other in the first place.

Figure people are way overthinking this whole thing. It's one meal or one round of drinks, not a mortgage payment. If the check makes things awkward that fast, the date probably wasn't going anywhere anyway. Let the person who asked pay if they insist, or split if you both want to keep things simple. Either way, it's just not that deep.
