Finally went on a date after 8 months and spilled coffee on her jacket in the first 5 minutes

We met at this little cafe in Brooklyn and I was so nervous my hand just jerked when I reached for my cup. It went all over her white denim jacket and she just sat there staring at it soaking in. Has anyone else had a date totally fall apart right at the start like that and somehow still salvage it?

I'd be more mad at myself than if the waiter did it. At least then you'd have a story to tell and maybe a free drink. Now you're just sitting there looking like a clumsy mess for no reason.

Different take here. @elizabeth900, mistakes can actually break the ice if you play it right. That jacket thing is such a clear "I'm nervous" sign that it might make her laugh instead of cringe. The real test is how you handle it after. Buy her a new jacket if she wants, joke about getting you a sippy cup next time. I'd honestly be more worried if the date was perfectly smooth from the start. That tension is worse than a little coffee on denim.
