Picking the check vs. splitting it on a first date - what's the move?
I went on a date last Friday with someone from Hinge and when the $68 bill came, I panicked and grabbed it before she could. She seemed relieved but then later said I was 'too traditional'. Would letting her split have gone better? Anyone else deal with this?

Ugh, the whole "too traditional" thing cracks me up. Honestly, it feels like you can't win no matter what you do these days. Either you're being a chauvinist for offering to pay, or you're being cheap for wanting to split it. It's like the whole dating scene is just one big walking-on-eggshells test with no right answers.

You know what, @elizabethg18, that's the part that gets me too. I've been on maybe 40 first dates in the last three years and every single one felt like I was solving a puzzle where the rules change halfway through. So I gotta ask - what do you actually look for in a guy's approach to paying? Like do you prefer when someone just offers to cover it without making a big deal, or do you secretly judge them if they don't at least offer? I've had girls get mad at me for both. It's exhausting trying to read between the lines of what people actually want versus what they say they want.
