Split the check or let him pay? My broke date taught me a lesson

I went out with this guy last Friday in Chicago, and when the bill came he just stared at it. I offered to split, he said no, then asked me to Venmo him $40 because he forgot his wallet. Do I call that cheap or just honest? Has anyone else dealt with the awkward money dance, and what's the better move?

The part where he said he "forgot his wallet" kind of makes me pause, because that's a classic move if you're trying to avoid looking broke in the moment. But honestly, I think you're overthinking this one. He was upfront about needing the $40, and he didn't make you cover the whole thing, which is more than a lot of people would do. Being broke isn't a character flaw, it's just a fact sometimes. The real red flag would be if he ignored the bill completely or made you pay for everything without saying a word. What he did was awkward but honest, and honestly that's a better sign than pretending he had cash and then stiffing you later.
