The math teacher who corrected my drink order on a first date
Met this guy at a coffee shop downtown and he literally pulled out a red pen to 'grade' my menu choice. I ordered a chai latte and he said that's technically a 'tea mist' not a latte, then wrote the correction on a napkin. I just stood there with my drink getting cold while he explained emulsion ratios for 10 minutes. Has anyone else dealt with a date who couldn't stop correcting everything you said?

Maybe he was just nervous and overcorrecting with the only thing he knew well.

Nail it on the head. Paul was a total car guy but zero people person, so when the awkwardness hit at dinner, he defaulted to talking about the Subaru's valve timing. Nervous rambling about something you actually know is way different than being a show-off.

That napkin correction thing is brutal. Three minutes of emulsion ratios would kill any buzz. @torres.sage is right that nerves can make someone cling to their comfort zone, but there’s a difference between awkward rambling and actually pulling out a red pen. That’s not nerves. That’s a power move pretending to be a lesson. I guess some people just can’t turn off the teacher mode even when they’re supposed to be flirting.
