Warning: never ask a guy about his 'exclusive' hobby on a first date

Met this guy from an app at a coffee shop downtown. He mentioned he had a 'unique' hobby, so I asked about it. He spent the next 45 minutes explaining the detailed lore of his Warhammer 40k army, complete with a slideshow on his phone. I learned that a first date isn't the time for niche passion deep dives unless you're both in that world. Anyone else have a date where a simple question opened a floodgate you couldn't close?

My last date asked about my hobbies and I accidentally explained the entire plot of a 20 year old video game. I could see his eyes glaze over halfway through the first disc. We've all been the person with the weird hobby, just maybe not with a slideshow ready to go.

My buddy once got asked about his favorite book on a first date. He launched into a full breakdown of this obscure fantasy novel's magic system. Started drawing diagrams on a napkin about mana channels. She excused herself to the bathroom and texted him from the cab. He was left there with a half-finished drawing of a fictional energy grid.

The slideshow really takes it to another level. At least the Warhammer guy came prepared like he was giving a TED talk.
