Can we talk about how I used to keep every useless gift out of guilt until my closet hit 40 items?
I used to display every mug, keychain, and scented candle my aunt Brenda from Cleveland gave me, even the singing fish that broke in 2019. Now I take a picture, text a thank you, and drop it at the Goodwill on Route 9 within a week. Last month my cousin gave me a decorative spoon rack and I felt zero guilt handing it back at her own party. Does anyone else have a rule for when a gift crosses the line from sweet to clutter?
Oh man, the singing fish is the real hero of this story. My rule is pretty simple: if I can't remember who gave it to me a year later, it's gone. I keep a small box for the stuff that actually means something, and everything else gets the picture-and-donate treatment. The spoon rack thing is great, honestly returning it right at her party saves everyone the slow death of it sitting in a drawer for five years. Aunt Brenda mugs are a losing battle though, you just have to accept those.
