Got a fruitcake in July that was clearly regifted from Christmas 2019. Should I regift it again or just toss it?

I pulled it out of the wrapper and it had a faint smell of mothballs and regret. Has anyone ever actually eaten one of these things or do we all just pass them around like a hot potato?

Fruitcake lasts forever but 2019 is pushing it even for fruitcake standards.

Terrybennett's right about that 2019 fruitcake being a stretch. What worked for me was just accepting some stuff is past its prime and finally tossing it. Had a similar thing with a fruitcake my aunt gave me back in 2018 - I kept thinking maybe this year it'd finally be worth eating, but it never was. Finally just threw it in the compost bin and felt way lighter. @terrybennett sometimes the best move is just cutting your losses and starting fresh, fruitcake or whatever else you're holding onto.

Man that's the whole fruitcake economy in a nutshell, we all just keep passing the same problems around hoping nobody notices the expiration date.
