My aunt gave me a 'self-watering' cactus that came with a spray bottle
Last Christmas my well-meaning aunt handed me a tiny cactus in a pot that had 'self-watering' written on the side in sharpie, plus a spray bottle labeled 'for the plant.' I figured she just forgot the real gift until I realized the spray bottle was empty and the cactus was glued into the pot. Has anyone else gotten a gift that was basically a joke you had to figure out on your own?

Figure out the joke first, then figure out how to handle it. That's like 90% of adult relationships if you ask me. My brother once gave me a "gourmet cooking kit" that was just a box of salt with a handwritten recipe for "make your own gourmet meal" which was basically just add salt to everything. I kept that salt for like a year because I felt like it was some kind of test. It's like people just want to see how you react to things without actually putting in the effort. The spray bottle thing sounds about right too, probably a leftover from some office party.

Did you ever figure out what he was trying to test you on? I had a coworker leave a half-eaten bag of chips on my desk once with a note that just said "your turn." I kept it there for a week before I finally threw it away. Sometimes the best way to handle the mystery gifts is to just acknowledge them with a "thanks, that was creative" and move on. If you laughed and used the salt, you passed the test. If you kept staring at it confused, you probably still passed because you cared enough to wonder.

So did you end up using that salt or just stare at it?
