My brother got me a $75 singing fish and mom got me socks, guess which one I still have
Every holiday I think about the year my brother spent $75 on one of those singing fish plaques that flap their mouth when you walk by. It lasted about two days in my apartment before the sensor broke and it just screamed at random hours of the night. Mom meanwhile handed me a plain pack of gray socks in a paper bag and I honestly rolled my eyes at the time. Ten years later those socks outlasted three apartments, and the fish got tossed in a dumpster behind my old place in Cincinnati. What I figured out is that a gift you actually use beats a gift that's just funny for five minutes. Funny gifts are for the giver, useful stuff is for the person holding the bag. My brother still brings up the fish at every cookout like he won something. Does anyone else have a relative who thinks spending more money makes a gift better regardless of what it is?
