My grandma's 2005 fruitcake finally made it full circle

I mean, my grandma has given me the same homemade fruitcake every December for like 10 years now. She wraps it in foil and puts a little bow on it, and I always just regift it to my uncle since he thinks it's hilarious. Last week I saw a post on a local garage sale group in Des Moines where someone was selling a 'vintage fruitcake from 2005' for $5, and I swear it had the same faded ribbon pattern my grandma uses. I zoomed in and the foil was shaped exactly like her loaf pan, idk if it's actually hers but the idea that this thing has been circulating between relatives and strangers for almost 20 years cracked me up. Has anyone else ever tracked a terrible gift that kept getting regifted back to them somehow?

See I gotta disagree with you here. That fruitcake has been doing exactly what it was meant to do for the last 20 years, which is keep showing up and making people laugh. Every single person who opened that foil has gotten a story out of it. Your grandma isn't trying to force you to eat it, she's trying to give you something to pass along, and honestly that's kind of sweet in its own weird way. The garage sale thing just proves that even strangers get in on the joke. Maybe the real waste would be if somebody actually ate it and ended the cycle.
