My uncle gave me a 'survival kit' with a single can of Spam and a spork

For Christmas two years ago, my uncle handed me this little pouch all serious, saying I'd need it when the grid goes down. I laughed it off until last month when my power was out for 3 days after a storm in Portland. That can of Spam and the spork actually came in clutch when I was too stubborn to leave my apartment. Has anyone else gotten a gift that seemed ridiculous but ended up being useful in a pinch?

Nobody's brought up the mental game though... that spork and can combo is like a little reminder you can actually handle things when they go wrong. Open that can cold with the spork if you have to... that salty meat taste is better than nothing when you're hungry and the stores are closed. I've been there, eating Spam straight from the can while watching my phone battery die. It's not fancy but it fills the hole. Your uncle might be onto something...

I see what you're saying about survival mode, but cold Spam straight from the can is a rough move. The texture gets all weird and greasy, almost like congealed butter with meat chunks. I'd rather walk to the 24-hour gas station and drop $4 on a sad microwave burrito than eat it that way. At least give it a quick pan sear for 90 seconds, that changes everything. The crispy edges make it almost decent. You really prefer it cold like that?
