Rant: my dad gave me a "gift" for 6 years straight that was just stuff he wanted for himself

I was going through old photos and realized that from age 14 to 20, every Christmas and birthday from my dad was something HE liked. Fishing gear when I never fished. A tool set when I was 16. A hunting vest. Last year I finally asked him about it and he said "well I figured you'd grow into it." I'm 38 now and still haven't touched a fishing pole. Anyone else get gifts that were clearly for the giver?

Honestly, I'll be the one to say it - is this really that big of a deal? Like yeah, it's a little clueless on his part, but he probably just thought he was sharing his hobbies with you. My dad bought me a set of golf clubs when I was 15 and I've never golfed a day in my life, but I just thanked him and moved on. Some parents just aren't great at reading their kids, doesn't mean it's malicious or anything.

Three dads I know do the exact same thing every year with fishing gear or power tools, and none of their kids are into it either. It's kind of annoying to see people acting like this is some deep betrayal when it's just a parent being a little out of touch with what you actually like. Half the time they're just trying to connect the only way they know how, even if it misses the mark completely.
