Appreciation post: the night shift janitor at my old office gave me better career advice than my manager
I got passed over for a lead spot at a logistics office in Garland back in 2022. My manager gave me the usual speech about paying my dues and being a team player. The janitor, Luis, was emptying trash near my desk at 9pm and asked why I was still there. I told him and he said "they already know what you do, so stop doing extra for free and start doing it where people can see it." I started logging my wins in a shared doc and got the next opening. Has anyone else gotten real advice from someone who wasn't supposed to be part of the conversation?
