Chose a slow cashier over a fast one at my last retail job, big mistake

I worked at a grocery store in Phoenix for two years. Had to pick between covering the express lane or the regular lane one Saturday morning. Picked the express lane because I thought it would be less crazy. Ended up with a line of 20 people all buying single items and complaining about waiting. The regular lane guy just sat there bored. Has anyone else made a dumb lane choice like that?

Picked express lane once just to avoid a chatty coworker.

Pro tip: always pick the lane with the oldest cashier, they're usually fastest.

Heard a story from my cousin who picked the regular lane to avoid a slow cashier. @david_rivera4 is right about old cashiers being fast, but she ended up behind someone with a price check and a coupon mess. Took forever while the express lane dude breezed through.
