I finally saw what happens when a boss actually backs up their team vs just talking about it
Honestly, I worked at this retail chain in Denver for 3 years and the difference between my first manager and the second one was insane. Old manager would let customers scream at us over return policies and never step in. New manager came in last January and she'd tell rude customers to leave within 30 seconds of them starting. Our turnover went from like 80% a year to maybe 20% after 6 months of her being there. She just actually enforced the rules we had written down. Has anyone else had a boss who made that big of a difference in how you felt about coming to work?

Oh wow, that is such a perfect example of what I'm talking about. I think you got the timeline slightly mixed up though - your post says you worked there for 3 years, but your second paragraph implies the old manager was there before January and the new one came in last year, so that would be more like 2 years total (unless the old manager was there for part of 2023 too, which honestly makes sense). But seriously, your point about enforcing rules is huge. It's wild how many places have policies but managers just let people ignore them. Like, what's even the point of having a "customer must be respectful" rule if you never use it? It drives me crazy when bosses act like the rules only apply to employees and not the people yelling at them. Having that one person who actually has your back changes everything about how safe you feel at work.
