My boss set up a "5 minute daily standup" that ran 40 minutes every day for 6 months
So my old boss at a logistics company in Columbus got really into some productivity book and started doing these daily standups at 8am. He said it would take 5 minutes, and then it would go 40 minutes of him talking about his weekend and asking us about ours. Nobody could get anything done before lunch because we lost our whole morning momentum. I started sending a summary email at 7:50am with exactly what I was working on, who I needed stuff from, and my blockers. When he called on me in the meeting, I just said "it's all in the email I sent" and he moved on. Within two weeks everyone on my team was doing it, and the meetings dropped to about 8 minutes because he had nothing to dig into. Six months later the whole thing got cut down to twice a week. Has anyone else found a way to quietly kill a meeting without getting fired for it?
