Picked the night shift over weekends and it ruined my sleep for 6 months
I had to choose between working Friday through Sunday nights or Monday through Thursday days at this warehouse in Phoenix. Took the night shift thinking I could sleep during the day and have weekends off. But the heat and noise from my apartment complex meant I got maybe 4 hours of sleep a day. My manager kept calling me in for meetings at 11 AM too. Has anyone else made a shift decision that backfired like this?

Actually switching might have been the best move long term. Weekend nights in Phoenix during summer are probably brutal but at least you weren't sitting in warehouse heat during the day. Day shifts have their own problems like traffic and less free time.

I get what you're saying about day shifts having traffic and less free time lol but I don't totally agree that switching was the best move long term. The guy literally said his sleep was ruined for 6 months, that's not really a small thing to brush off. Phoenix heat and noise during the day would mess anyone up, plus getting called in for meetings at 11am when you're supposed to be sleeping is just bad management on their end. I think sometimes people underestimate how bad lack of sleep can mess with your whole life, not just your work schedule.

Moved to graveyard shift myself a few years back and it took a solid 3 months before my body adjusted to sleeping during the day. Blackout curtains and a white noise machine were the only things that saved me.
