I used to think cilantro tasted like soap and argued with my friend about it

Overheard my roommate say it's genetic and now I eat it on everything. Has anyone else had their taste buds just flip on a food like that?

My buddy Steve ate a Brussels sprout at a Christmas party three years ago just to be polite and said it tasted like dirt mixed with regret. Now he buys them frozen in bulk and roasts them with balsamic every Sunday like he's making up for lost time. He still can't explain the switch, just says his mouth got bored of being picky.

Wait, so you hated it until you found out it was genetic and then suddenly you loved it? That's kind of wild to me. Did the actual taste change for you, or did you just decide to like it because you had an explanation for why it was bad? I'm genuinely curious if the brain can just override what your taste buds are doing once you know the science behind it. Because I've heard so many people say the same thing about cilantro and it's almost like a switch flips for them.

Curious if you ever tried masking the soapy taste with something strong like lime or chili before you knew it was genetic, or was it just pure hatred until the switch flipped? Seems like knowing it's not your fault might make it easier to push through, but I wonder if the actual physical sensation changes or if your brain just learns to ignore it. Did you have to keep eating it over and over for the shift to happen, or was it pretty much instant once you had the explanation?
