Rant: That time I argued kale was a fad vegetable with a farmer at the Eugene market
I spent 10 minutes telling a guy at his own stall that kale would die out in a year, and he just smiled and handed me a sample of lacinato he grew from seed, and now I grow five kinds of kale each season and have to avoid that market during his shifts.

My friend Laura had a similar moment at the farmers market with rhubarb. She told an old grower that rhubarb was just sour celery and nobody actually likes it. He just laughed and said "try it with strawberries and a little sugar, you'll change your tune." Now she has three rhubarb plants in her backyard and brings rhubarb crisp to every potluck. She won't go near that guy's stand anymore though. The shame is real.

Actually lacinato kale has been grown in Italy since the 1800s so it's more of a heirloom than a fad, but I get the embarrassment of being so wrong in public like that.
