Swore I could fix my own dishwasher last Saturday, flooded the kitchen instead
Took apart the drain pump, lost the spring, and $60 later the repair guy just laughed at me.

@murphy.barbara nailed it. That laugh is the surcharge for our dumb decisions. My wife still brings up the flooded floor at dinner. Said I looked like a confused labrador standing in the water. Now I just call a pro first thing and save the embarrassment.

That laugh is the universal sound of "I've seen this exact thing 50 times this week." It says a lot about how we all think we're one YouTube video away from being plumbers or electricians. You realize it's the same pattern with the guy who tries to fix his lawnmower engine and ends up with extra parts, or the person who attempts a simple car oil change but somehow drains the transmission fluid. Homeownership is just an endless cycle of trying to be handy, failing miserably, and then paying a pro twice as much because you made the problem worse.
