Was I wrong about boxed cake mix or is my sister right about scratch cakes?

Went to a potluck last weekend in Austin. My sister brought a from-scratch chocolate cake she spent 3 hours on. I brought a box mix with canned frosting. People ate both and nobody could tell the difference. She says scratch is always better. I say for a party nobody cares. What do you think, is box mix fine or am I just lazy?

Yeah right, because people at potlucks are whispering cake reviews like they're at a wine tasting.

Haven't you considered that the scratch cake people might just say they can't tell the difference to be polite? I've seen plenty of potlucks where box mix gets eaten fast because it's convenient, but the scratch stuff gets the real compliments whispered later when nobody's listening. Your mileage may vary but I think scratch has a texture and depth that box mix just doesn't nail no matter how you dress it up.
