Caught myself making cookies with melted butter for 8 years before a friend yelled at me
I always thought melted butter made cookies chewier and better. Turns out I was making greasy sad discs instead of actual cookies. My buddy stopped by while I was baking last month and watched me pour the melted butter in. She goes "what are you doing" like I was committing a crime. She grabbed her phone and showed me a side by side of melted vs room temp butter cookies. I felt so dumb because I literally have a food science degree but never questioned my own process. Has anyone else had that moment where you realize a basic swap changes everything?

...although my moment was way less scientific and more just pure laziness... I spent like two years throwing cold butter straight into my mixer thinking "eh, it'll soften while I'm mixing" and ended up with cookies that had these weird little butter chunks in them like some kind of failed science experiment. At least you had a good reason with the melted stuff! But honestly, that "friend yelling at you while you're baking" energy is so real though... my roommate caught me doing it once and just stared at me with this look of pure disappointment like I'd personally insulted her grandmother's recipe.

Two years of cold butter chunks is honestly impressive commitment to the method, I can't even be mad at that. That roommate stare of pure disappointment hits different though, like you've committed a baking sin that everyone else just somehow knows is wrong. The real question is did you ever actually fix it or did you just accept the chunk cookies as your signature thing?
