I tried to bake bread for my girlfriend's birthday and the smoke alarm went off before her parents even got there
Last Saturday I decided to bake a loaf of bread for my girlfriend's birthday dinner at her parents' place in Austin, and I figured a simple recipe off the back of a flour bag was safe. Twenty minutes in, the dough was still wet in the middle and already burnt on top, so I cranked the heat up to 450 thinking that would fix it. That was dumb, because the bottom scorched black in about 8 minutes and the kitchen filled with smoke right as her dad walked in the door. I scraped the burnt crust off, cut it into thin slices, and told everyone it was "rustic focaccia" while praying nobody looked too close. Has anyone actually saved a ruined loaf, or do you just toss it and blame the oven like I did?
