Just realized my $15 thrift store stand mixer was the best money I ever spent
That cheap mixer handled 6 batches of cookie dough last Christmas without a hiccup while my friend's $400 model overheated on the second batch has anyone else had a random bargain appliance outperform the expensive stuff?

Used to be one of those people who thought you had to spend big money on kitchen stuff. Then I got a $20 blender from a garage sale that's been running for 5 years straight, meanwhile my sister's fancy brand name one died after 8 months. That thrift store mixer story is exactly the kind of thing I see all the time now. There's something about older simpler machines that just don't quit, they're built with actual metal gears and stuff instead of plastic that melts. Makes me wonder how many expensive gadgets are just marketing hype.

lol I mean yeah it's awesome that your $15 mixer is still kicking, but let's not act like it's some kind of miracle. Simple machines with less features are usually going to last longer because there's less to break. Your friend's $400 model probably had like 12 settings and a digital display that was just asking to die. Not saying expensive stuff is always a scam, but people do get way too worked up over this like it's some deep truth about consumerism or whatever. Enjoy the bargain, but it's not that deep.

logan705 that line about "actual metal gears instead of plastic that melts" really hits home. I grabbed a beat up old stand mixer at a yard sale for like $12 a few years back and that thing has been through hell. Made bread dough so thick the motor would actually slow down but it just kept going. Meanwhile my buddy's high end kitchenaid with all the fancy attachments stopped working after a year because a plastic gear stripped out inside. The whole situation got me wondering if we're just paying for status and pretty colors instead of stuff that works. Sometimes simple is better and those old machines prove it.
