My neighbor said my bread looked like a brick

She told me straight up, 'Betty, that loaf could stop a door.' I was using a recipe from a 1980s church cookbook that called for way too much flour. I cut the flour by a quarter cup and started weighing my ingredients instead of using cups. The next batch was soft and actually rose. Anyone else have a recipe that needed a serious fix?

My grandma's meatloaf recipe from the 70s needed a full cup less breadcrumbs. It was basically a salty sponge before I fixed it.

Sounds like your grandma, samwalker, was trying to make a meatloaf-flavored dish sponge.

Lol that meatloaf sponge description is too real. My aunt's old recipe did the same thing with way too many breadcrumbs. It came out so dry you could hear it squeak when you cut it. Took me years to figure out the breadcrumb ratio was totally off. Now I use like a third of what she wrote down and add more broth. Turns into actual food instead of a kitchen experiment.
