Serious question, has anyone else's sourdough starter ever just given up?
My starter, which I've kept alive since 2020, completely failed to rise after I fed it with a new bag of King Arthur flour last Tuesday. I tried two more feeds with my old brand, but it just sat there like a sad, flat pancake batter. What's the most reliable way you've found to revive a seemingly dead starter?

It's just flour, not a pet.

Right, "just flour". That's the whole point. You treat it right, it makes good bread. You ignore it, it goes bad. It's a living thing you have to care for. That's way more like a pet than people get.

Elizabeth gets it exactly right. Sourdough starter needs regular feeding and attention just like a pet, or it will die. Mary776 might see it as just flour now, but that changes once you forget it in the fridge for a month and find a jar of hooch. You have to learn its rhythms and what it needs to stay healthy. It's a commitment that gives back when you treat it well. Ever name your starter?
