Shoutout to the $75 stand mixer that died mid-cake yesterday

I was in the zone making a birthday cake for my sister, about 5 minutes into creaming butter and sugar, when my mixer just stopped. Smoke started pouring out the back vents. I yanked the plug and now the kitchen smells like burnt motor. This was a cheap hand-me-down from a neighbor, lasted maybe 6 months with light use. I ended up finishing the batter by hand with a whisk, took forever and my arm is dead. Anyone else have a mixer fail at the worst possible moment? What did you upgrade to after?

Real talk, that smoke smell is a rite of passage for any home baker. I bet the motor just couldn't handle the torque of cold butter, those cheap ones always have plastic gears inside. Maybe check thrift stores for an old KitchenAid from the 80s or 90s, those metal ones are tanks and usually under 40 bucks if you're patient. My grandmother's still runs like a champ after 30 years, no smoke ever.

My grandmother had an old Sunbeam that finally gave up last year, same exact thing with the smoke. @the_riley is right about those older KitchenAids being built different, I picked one up at a garage sale for fifteen bucks a few years back and it hasn't let me down yet. Hope you find a good replacement that doesn't try to bake itself.
