Tried making sourdough starter with kefir instead of water

The thing bubbled over my counter in 6 hours and smelled like a gym sock. Learned that kefir bacteria is way more aggressive than wild yeast - anyone else accidentally create a science experiment?

My buddy Dave tried that exact thing and his starter basically turned into a bubbling monster that jumped out of the jar and ran down his cabinets. He said the smell was so bad his girlfriend made him take it straight to the trash can outside. The kefir just took over everything and killed the yeast before it could even get going. He ended up having to scrub his whole kitchen counter with bleach because the smell lingered for days. I guess fast and aggressive isn't always better when you're trying to grow something for bread. Did you try saving any of it or did you just toss the whole mess?
