My daughter asked me what a checkbook was while we were cleaning out my desk drawer.

That's a real "time capsule" moment right there. Did you end up showing her an old check, or just try to explain it? I'm curious how you even start to describe the whole process of writing one, balancing it by hand, and then mailing it.

Grabbed an old checkbook from my desk to show her the actual paper. Explained you had to write the date, the payee, the amount in numbers and words, then sign it. Told her about keeping the stub in the register to subtract it from your balance, which felt like a second job sometimes. The whole mailing thing really blew her mind, that you'd put this important slip of paper in a box and just hope it got there.

Show her a canceled check and tell her it traveled through the mail, that'll really freak her out.
