Overheard a guy at the coffee shop say he never checks his bank app on weekends
That got me thinking about my own habits. I used to check my balance like 5 times a day, especially after every purchase under $10. Last month I decided to only check it on Monday mornings. It took some getting used to, but I actually felt less stressed after a few weeks. The big takeaway for me was that the small charges were adding up to about $120 a month I didn't really notice. Has anyone else tried limiting when they look at their account?

Wait, did anyone else catch that article about how checking your bank account triggers the same part of your brain as gambling? I swear I saw a study somewhere that said the anxiety spike from seeing a surprise low balance actually makes people spend more to feel better. Your coffee shop guy might be onto something weirdly smart. I tried the 'only on payday' method after my therapist mentioned it, and it was brutal for the first two weeks. But now I actually notice when I'm about to overspend because I have to stop and guess what my balance is before I check. Rough math in my head is way more honest than staring at numbers all day.

Wow, ok so that gambling-brain connection makes so much sense. I mean think about it - we're all addicted to small dopamine hits from completely random things, like the rush of a notification or the little thrill of guessing if you have more money left than you thought. It's the same part of the brain that lights up when you pull a slot machine lever, just dressed up in responsible adult clothes. I've noticed it shows up everywhere, not just banking - like how people get that same jittery energy from constantly checking their follower counts or refreshing their email inbox. We've basically trained ourselves to seek out these tiny unpredictable rewards, and when we don't get the good one (like a low balance or a bad email), we just go looking for another quick fix. Probably why so many of us can't just sit still without some kind of screen in our face, always chasing the next little hit.

OH MY GOD that explains so much! I thought I was the only one who got a weird little rush when I check my balance and it's higher than expected. Like I hit the mini jackpot of being an adult for once. But the crash when it's low? I've DEFINITELY gone and bought a fancy coffee or some dumb little treat to make myself feel better about it. So your therapist's tip about checking only on payday sounds terrifying but also brilliant. I bet my brain would finally learn to do the math instead of just panic-spending. I just know the first time I do it I'm going to mentally subtract rent, forget I already paid the electric bill, and think I have way more than I actually do. Classic me.
