PSA: My $60 coffee maker almost cost me $300 in bank fees

Had auto pay set for my credit card. The day it was due, my coffee maker shorted out and tripped the breaker. Woke up late, forgot to check my account. Missed the payment by 2 hours. Got hit with a $35 late fee and my rate jumped. Cost me $300 in extra interest over 3 months. Anyone else had a small appliance wreck their finances like that?

Did a buddy's smart plug glitch and rack up $200 in overdraft fees.

My friend had a similar thing with a smart plug for his space heater. It kept turning on and off all night. Cost him like $60 extra on his electric bill before he noticed. He just unplugged the thing and went back to a regular timer.

Wait, so my toaster's toast settings are secretly plotting my financial ruin too? @the_sam your buddy's smart plug story makes me think my whole kitchen is out to get my bank account.
