Switched from using cash envelopes to a separate checking account for groceries last March
I used to pull out cash every week and stuff it in envelopes labeled for different bills, but I kept losing track of the change. Then I opened a free checking account just for groceries and set up automatic transfers each payday. Has anyone else found a simple system that actually stops you from overspending on variable expenses like food?

Started off hating the idea of separate accounts for stuff like groceries. Thought it was overcomplicating things and just another bill to track. But honestly, once I set up a dedicated checking account for food and eating out, I actually stopped blowing through cash on fast food runs. The automatic transfer really makes you think twice before grabbing an extra bag of chips or a last-minute pizza, because you can see that balance dropping real quick. Did you do anything special to decide how much you transfer each week, or just wing it based on last month's spending?

Hung on, I actually tracked every grocery and takeout receipt for a full month first. I was shocked to find out I was spending $340 a month on food, which felt way higher than I expected. So I set my weekly transfer to $80, which gave me a little buffer for the occasional pizza night or coffee run. It took about two months of tweaking - like bumping it up to $85 after one week where I ran out on a Thursday (that was rough). Now it's a solid system where I never panic about the grocery bill hitting my main account.
