That $45 card reader fee nearly killed my weekend market sales

Honestly I thought I was being smart skipping the fancy Square reader and going with a cheap knockoff from Amazon. Last Saturday at the flea market in Portland it started dropping transactions left and right, people got annoyed and walked off. I lost at least 8 sales before I realized the chip reader was failing on contactless payments. The vendor next to me had a backup reader and I had nothing, so I just stood there watching money walk away. Wish I had spent the extra $30 for the branded one with a warranty. Has anyone else had a cheap reader crap out at a busy event? What do you carry as a spare?
