That cashier at Chase who stopped me from losing $200 in fees

Last month I was at a Chase branch in downtown Portland to deposit my tips from the week. Just a normal Saturday, nothing special. The cashier this older lady maybe in her 50s looked at my deposit slip and asked if I was using the wrong account type. I told her nah I just needed to cash out quick. She leaned in and whispered that my checkings account had a $12 monthly fee I didnt even know about because I never read the fine print. She showed me on her screen how I could switch to a no fee account right there in 2 minutes. Saved me $144 a year just from that one chat. Has anyone else had a bank teller save them money like that without being asked?

Read a consumer report thing online that said bank tellers actually get trained to upsell you on accounts but some of them just quietly help you out instead. Totally had a similar thing happen at Wells Fargo a couple years back where this young guy told me about a "hidden" fee I was paying on my savings account that I never noticed. He just straight up changed it for me and said "don't mention it" like it was nothing. Its wild how much banks count on people just not paying attention to that stuff. Seriously appreciate those tellers who actually look out for you instead of just trying to push products.

That "don't mention it" part really got me... kind of reminds me of my own bank story. @jordan_young I had something similar happen at a credit union a few years back where this older teller noticed I was getting charged for overdraft protection I never signed up for. She just reversed all the charges from the past six months without even asking, then showed me how to opt out permanently on their app. Made me wonder how many people just never catch that stuff... it's like they count on you being in a hurry or not reading the fine print. Those little acts of decency from bank staff feel extra rare these days, probably because they're technically supposed to be selling you credit cards instead.
