The stat about contactless adoption in Germany caught me off guard
I was reading a European Central Bank report from last month and found out that only about 35% of point-of-sale transactions in Germany are contactless, compared to over 90% in the UK. That surprised me because Germany is usually seen as a tech-forward country. On one hand, Germans seem to really value cash for privacy and budgeting reasons. On the other hand, that low adoption rate means they are missing out on speed and convenience at checkout. I wonder if it is a cultural preference or if the infrastructure just isn't there yet. Any Germans here want to explain what is holding contactless back?

Why would anyone want to give up control of their spending like that?

...and my buddy Karl literally stood there in a Berlin bakery last month rummaging for coins while the cashier just sighed. He finally finds like 4.30 euros in mixed change, drops a 2 euro coin on the floor, and the lady behind him pulls out her phone and taps the terminal in two seconds. Karl's a software engineer too, so it's not like he's scared of tech. I think it's just habit and a weird pride thing about paying exactly, you know?
