TIL my local credit union in Austin still charges $3 for a cashier's check, while my online bank does it for free.
I needed one last week for a security deposit, and it got me thinking: should physical branches charge for these services to stay open, or does that just push everyone online? What do you think?

Honestly three bucks for a cashier's check feels like a rip-off these days. That's the exact kind of thing that makes people leave for online banks. Tbh if branches want to stay open they should find better ways to add value, not charge for basic paperwork. It just pushes people to do everything online, which then makes the branch even less useful. Ngl it feels like they're speeding up their own closing by annoying their last few customers.

Just ask them to waive the fee, they do it for me all the time. Act like you're about to close your account over it.

Come on, it's three dollars. Is that really worth the whole song and dance about closing your account? Banks have fees, it's how they pay for stuff. I just pay it and move on with my day. Making a big scene over a few bucks seems like more trouble than it's worth.
