Man at a rest stop outside Barstow had 3 phones and kept checking the map app on all of them
Stopped at a rest area off I-15 outside Barstow for gas and saw this older guy at the picnic table with three phones laid out, each showing a different route. He said he does it because the apps each pick different roads and he wants the one cops use less. I get why he wouldn't say that to just anyone, but it's kind of wild that avoiding traffic cams is a thing people quietly plan around. Does anyone else do the multiple phone thing or is that just him?
The part about wanting the route cops use less is the real story here. I ran three phones for about two years when I was doing long hauls between Vegas and LA, and the apps really do disagree more than people think. Google would send me down 138 through Pearblossom while Waze wanted the 15 to the 210, and on a Friday night that difference is an hour. The trick is you can't just stare at them, you pick your route before you leave and use the other two to watch for slowdowns ahead. Also keep them on different carriers if you can, because out past Barstow one will have signal and the others won't. Three is overkill unless he's running loads he shouldn't be, but two is just smart driving.
