My dad told me never to buy a house with a sump pump. Now I'm on my third replacement in 5 years.

Bought a place in Seattle back in 2019, figured he was just being paranoid about basements. Has anyone else had family give them outdated home advice that backfired?

Man I read this article from This Old House a few years back that said sump pumps in Seattle are basically a requirement now because of all the heavy rain and ground saturation from climate change. My buddy Mike in Portland has one that runs like every 20 minutes during the wet season, and he's only had to replace it once in 10 years but he went with a cast iron pump not the cheap plastic kind. Your dad probably remembers when basements weren't built with proper drainage and pumps were a bandaid, but now with all the new construction and stricter codes they're practically standard in the Pacific Northwest. Those plastic pumps you're buying might be the real problem, I've heard the metal ones last way longer even if they cost more upfront.

Got an uncle who swore by putting bricks in the toilet tank to save water. Told me it was a pro tip from the 70s. Flush stopped working right, ended up costing me a plumber callout and a whole new setup. Some advice just ages like milk.

Is sump pump failure really that common though? Feels like one of those things where people who have problems post about it online, but the thousands of houses with perfectly fine pumps just go about their day lol. Three replacements in five years sounds more like bad luck or a cheap install than some massive regional crisis.
