PSA: Found a weird trick for stubborn stain removal on old furniture

I had this oak dresser from my grandma that had these dark water rings from like 40 years ago. Tried sanding and oxalic acid but nothing touched them. Then an old refinisher told me to try a heat gun on low and a wet cloth - basically steam the marks out. It actually worked on 3 out of 5 rings after about 10 minutes of messing with it. Has anyone else tried something offbeat like that for antique finishes?

Has anyone ever tried using mayonaisse to get out those white heat marks on wood? My uncle swore by it, said the oil soaked into the finish overnight and somehow the rings just faded away. It left the drawer smelling like a sandwich for a week but dad was too impressed it worked to complain.

Huh, is this really a common problem worth all that effort though?

Is mayonnaise really a wood treatment people swear by?
