Rant: My uncle's old stories got me thinking about how much we lost when we stopped talking to neighbors
Last week I was helping my uncle Frank clean out his garage over in Phoenix. He started telling me about the 80s when he knew every person on his block by name. They would borrow tools, watch each other's kids, even share meals on Sundays. Fast forward to today and I barely know the guy two doors down from me. Three years ago I tried to wave at my new neighbor and he just stared at me and closed his blinds. Last month my pressure washer broke mid-job and I had to drive 20 miles to rent one because I didn't feel right asking anyone local. That's when it clicked that we traded community for convenience and privacy. Has anyone else noticed how hard it is to build real connections with the people living 50 feet from you?

Well actually, you can still borrow stuff from neighbors if you ask!

And honestly, loaning stuff can build trust with people you barely know if you do it right. I've traded tools with a few neighbors and it saves everyone money on stuff you only use once a year. Just set clear expectations on when you'll return it and nobody ends up annoyed.
